behind the name

I have been in love with sports from the time I was able to throw a baseball, swing a bat, catch a football, shoot a basketball, or kick a soccer ball. For my parents this was a blessing and a curse; I would always be able to entertain myself and it made presents a breeze for holidays and birthdays. Friends and family knew as long as it was sports related that I would be ecstatic. The downside to this meant that every room in the house was littered with tripping hazards on the floor. My parents had to buy large buckets to store everything. It helped to keep things consolidated, or so they had hoped, preventing them from stepping on a ball and cracking their head. As I got a bit bigger and grew into a typical boy, instead of my first inclination being to grab a ball out of a bucket to play with, I now would walk up to every bucket around the house, flip it upside down, dump the balls on the ground, put the bucket on my head, and then run around the house. Rightfully so, my father and mother nicknamed me bucket head. The nickname stuck around my entire life and anytime a story about my upbringing or sports was mentioned, “bucket head” was sure to follow.

Now in present day, I have a wife and two beautiful children. Our daughter, Sophia, was born in 2013 and in 2016, we had our son DJ. In 2018 Sophia was 5 years old and eligible to play tee-ball for her first year. We dusted off all the gear that I had saved for the day I had kids and we started practicing. About this time DJ was about 15 months old and was a walking hurricane. My wife, Whitnee, got home with DJ one day while Sophia and I were practicing in the yard. He raced out of the car onto the front lawn and watched Sophia hit a ball off the tee. Sophia ran the bases pumping her fists like Kirk Gibson of the 1988 Dodgers with a World Series walk off home run, my son DJ went right up to her as she raised her hands in the air on home plate and said, "Sissy my turn?". DJ picked up a baseball and the fire in his eyes was lit. Since that day he has been in love with sports. All he wants to do is throw a baseball, swing a bat, catch a football, shoot a basketball, or kick a soccer ball. This has made presents a breeze for holidays and birthdays. Friends and family know as long as it is sports related he will be a happy camper. However, our house was a walking tripping hazard and after a few near slip and falls, Whitnee and I had to go out and buy buckets to store everything. Now DJ has gotten bigger and being a typical boy, instead of his first inclination being to grab a ball out of the bucket to play with, he now walks up to every bucket around the house, flips it upside down, dumps the balls on the ground, puts the bucket on his head, and then runs around the house.

Rightfully so our son has been nicknamed by his mother and I, “Buckethead”

Our Story

Buckethead BBQ is owned and operated by David and Whitnee Guerra. We have always enjoyed cooking and entertaining for our family and friends. There’s no greater joy than each other’s company, good food, delicious local wines and microbrews; and our beautiful California weather. You could always find David by the pit and Whitnee filling someone’s glass and asking each person if they needed anything. For years we would have parties or just general get-together for no specific reason at all. Periodically we were asked by friends to cater their parties or even throw their events at our home. We never accepted any money, we just asked them cover the food and decorations expenses. I have had a lifelong passion for cooking, experimenting, and creating new recipes.

What has ultimately changed was being married to someone who is selfless and passionate about hosting others. It elevated my passion for cooking and it showed us how much fun it was to serve others. Where most people would look at it like a daunting and tiresome task, Whitnee and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We found such great satisfaction in hosting our friends, giving them a break from the daily routine of their lives, and taking on the stresses of planning an event. After catering a 50th birthday party, baby showers, and a few holiday parties, we had the idea to start a catering business. We have been very fortunate to have our family and friends by our side and we have listened to their compliments and criticisms, which has been an important part of the journey.

We are based in Roseville, California and have a great selection of meats, sides, and packages that we would love to work with you to create your own menu specifically for your catering needs.
